Who you gonna call?

[dropcap size=small]E[/dropcap]ver since the announcement of the Ghostbusters reboot, which will star an all female cast as the famous Ghostbusters squad, fans have not been so accepting towards the gender switch up of the team.

It was a great way to reboot a franchise and give it a slightly different feel, but apparently many didn’t feel that way. Kristen Wiig – who’s staring alongside Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon – responded to the surprising amount of backlash received from fans of the franchise.

In an interview with LA Times (where Wiig was promoting her upcoming project Nasty Baby), she expressed her surprise and disappointment at the fans reactions to the casting:

The fact there was so much controversy because we were women was surprising to me…Some people said some really not nice things about the fact that there were women. It didn’t make me mad, it just really bummed me out. We’re really honoring those movies.

You can understand her feelings towards the matter. It’s sad to see fans aren’t willing to embrace the change, especially when four fantastic female actors are taking on the roles.  And in this day and age, you’d hope that people would be more willing to see a female cast lead a franchise. Team Wiig.

The reboot will see old faces return from the original series for cameo appearances, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver popping up, and showing their support for the remake adaptation.

The reboot holds a lot of promise, and hopefully it’ll be a fun new direction for the lovable band of Ghostbusters.

Ghostbusters is due to hit theatres 15 July, 2016.
