Exactly where or when remains to be seen…
The timeline of the X-Men film series is currently a complicated, beautiful, and retconned mess. 2014’s Days of Future Past created (at least) two separate timelines for the long running franchise, and with Apocalypse coming this summer, we’re expecting these timelines to become even more complex.
Before Apocalypse however, is Deadpool.
Up until now, many have assumed the Merc with a Mouth’s standalone movie would exist outside of the X-Men film continuity, but Deadpool himself (Ryan Reynolds) has confirmed otherwise.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Reynolds explained that Deadpool will indeed fit (somehow) into the X-Men film universe.
“This film certainly works within the context of the X-Men universe,” Reynolds said, “”but it doesn’t necessarily include the sensibilities of an X-Men movie. It’s like taking an X-Men character, pumping him full of LSD and then releasing him back into that fold.”
Reynolds also clarified that the story of Deadpool will be fairly self-contained, and it will only connect to the wider series in “in our own very brief, glib way…”
We expect a least a few fourth wall-breaking jokes addressing how confusing the X-Men films continuity is.
Anyway, we have already seen that Deadpool will connect to prior X-Men films through Colossus, who has appeared in the original trilogy and Days of Future Past (portrayed by Daniel Cudmore).
However, the Colossus who will appear in Deadpool looks much more like his comics counterpart, and will also be portrayed by a different actor (Andre Tricoteux will provide motion capture for the character, while Stefan Kapičić will voice him).
Colossus as he will appear in Deadpool
How Deadpool explains this seemingly different Colossus remains to be seen, but we wouldn’t be surprised if another X-Men veteran stops by to visit (looking at you, Wolverine).
Even if the film doesn’t perfectly fit into the complicated X-Men timeline, or doesn’t have crazy cameos, we’re still excited to see Wade Wilson in action.
Deadpool slices into theaters on February 12, 2016.
