The Super Russo Bros. are pretty happy with Spidey’s introduction to the MCU.Â
Since the release of the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War, the Internet has seemingly been split on one thing: Spider-Man’s costume.Â
Yes, in a surprise reveal, we finally got our first glimpse of Tom Holland garbed as Spidey, but not surprisingly, many aren’t pleased with the way he looks, with many critics believing the suit looks like unfinished CGI.Â
Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Civil War, are well aware of this criticism, and they don’t really seem to care, as they, and a lot of other people at Marvel, like the way Spider-Man looks.Â
The directors talked with Forbes on Spider-Man’s appearance in their film, beginning specifically with the mixed reception to Spidey’s suit.Â
Joe explained:Â
“The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. He’s a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it.”
Anthony continued by pointing out that the fan’s opinions may change, as we’ve only seen a few seconds of the MCU version of Spider-Man.Â
“Part of issue is that we gave such a small impression of the character in that trailer, it’s something of a Rorschach test where people can pour as much of their Spidey anxieties out but when they see the movie they are going to get a very big picture of a very complete character that they have never seen before. It’s kind of hard to react to people’s reactions but they will change radically when they see the movie.”
The directors were then questioned if Spider-Man would appear in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 (which they said is still being determined), and if his suit might change before then.Â
“We like making strong choices with characters so while this might be a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit, it is certainly in our vocabulary to develop it into something more extreme as the storytelling requires,” explained Joe. ” I think there are things that people will discover when they see the film about why the suit operate the way it does, why the eyes move, all that stuff is substantiated. Everybody wants the answers yesterday but then what would be the point of seeing the movie?”
Basically, the Russo Bros. are asking us to be patient, and wait till the film actually comes out to fully judge the appearance, and new take, on Spider-Man. The problem is, that is getting a lot harder to do.Â
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.Â
