Announced just moments ago as a part of Gamescom 2024, Gearbox Software has officially unveiled Borderlands 4. While no gameplay footage was shown, a teaser trailer was released that shows an unknown individual reach down and pick up a Psycho mask. Take a look:

Fans of the franchise will be happy to know that they will once again take on the role of a legendary Vault Hunter who will shoot and loot their way across… somewhere. The game promises its usual and signature chaotic and loot-driven experience as players battle through hordes of enemies on an all-new planet in search of treasures and powerful weapons. No word on if there will be any live-service-y features, which is certainly a good thing. For now.

This announcement comes at a curious time, just days after the disastrous theatrical release of the Borderland movie, which has been met with widespread criticism. Both audiences and critics have panned the film, and it has been a significant box office failure, losing upwards of $100 million for the studios and investors involved. The movie’s poor reception has cast a shadow over the franchise, raising questions about the film franchises future. But then again, the answer must be that it is just straight up dead at this point.

Gearbox | 2K

While it’s likely that the reveal of Borderlands 4 was always planned for Gamescom 2024, many believe that Gearbox and the publishers may be trying to shift the narrative surrounding the Borderlands brand in the wake of the movie’s disastrous performance fresh in everyone’s minds. The announcement of a new installment in the beloved game series appears to be a strategic move to steer the conversation in a more positive direction, which it no doubt desperately needed.

Fans of the series are hopeful that Borderlands 4 will reignite the excitement and success that the franchise has enjoyed in the past as the promise of new adventures, enemies, and treasures on an unexplored planet is already generating buzz, and many are eager to see if the game can live up to the high expectations set by its predecessors.

Borderlands 4 comes to consoles and PC in 2025. You can wishlist the game now.
