[dropcap size=small]J[/dropcap]ames Gunn recently had the opportunity to give hungry fans some insider info on the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit. Gunn jokingly opened the conversation up with:
[dropcap size=small]“[/dropcap]It’s going to be a really surprising open. What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes, in really horribly brutal fashion.”
Obviously, this was said in jest. He later went on to tell those in attendance that all the characters from the original film will be making a reappearance, along with some other characters from the first film. Names of characters, however, were not given. Gunn’s passion for the project and expanding the universe is thriving and unstoppable, he was also quoted in the discussion:
“I spent all day on Aug. 1, the day the first movie was released, writing ‘Guardians 2′, I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story.”
This quote alone should instill excitement and anticipation for the many fans of the first film, it is easy for writers and directors to taste success with a formula and stick to it. From this interview it appears as though Gunn is chomping at the bit to expand the audience view of this universe and create a rich and compelling world for these characters’ lives to play out.
Aside from talking about ‘Guardians 2’, Gunn also gave information on the upcoming DVD release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy”. Fans can expect to see behind the scenes footage aplenty, as well as get insights into the production of the first film. One of the hot topics Gunn says will be included in extras show is passion for wanting the film to be delivered in 3D right from the outset of production. 3D is a highly contested format on both sides of the aisle. Some fiercely advocating, and others fiercely opposing. Gunn believes the 3D aspect of the first film was a major contributor to its continued success.
What are your thoughts? Do you think 3D is a major contributing factor when it comes to the success of films such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? Or is it just a distraction that has lost its novelty?
