[dropcap size=small]C[/dropcap]ambridge, Massachusetts-based developer the Molasses Flood has announced a new survival game for both PC and Mac called The Flame in the Flood. While the studio may not be a household name, it’s made up of people who’ve worked on plenty of titles that are, including Halo, BioShock, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero.
The game is described by the studio as a “rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten post-societal America” with three simple goals: “forage, craft, evade predators.” Users will play as a character named Scout who will have to use real life survival tactics to find food, treat injuries, and stay ahead of the oncoming rainstorms. The locales seen in the game while traveling down-river are based on real places in the U.S. including the Louisiana Bayou, Florida Everglades, and Mississippi Delta.
One major feature of the game worth noting is the presence of permadeath. If the player’s character dies, they will respawn at the top of the river with its entirety left to navigate; however, Scout’s trusty dog Aesop will be waiting with all of the items the player has acquired up to that point.
An original soundtrack will be recorded for the game by alt-country singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan who first gained notoriety as part of post-hardcore/punk outfit Hot Water Music. Ragan is set to collaborate on the soundtrack with The Fearless Kin, The Camaraderie, and other special guests to be announced.
In order to get the game off the ground, the developer is looking for help from gamers via Kickstarter with a goal of raising $150,000 by Novembery 6th. (At the time of writing, the team has less than $17,000 to go with 26 days left.) Pledgers who donate $20 or more will receive a digital copy of the game plus increasing incentives including a digital version of the soundtrack, exclusive artwork, your name in the credits, and even in the game itself.
