The Expendables Are Weak at the Box Office 8/15-8/17

[dropcap size=small]M[/dropcap]aintaining it’s number one spot for the second week now is the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Though hit with generally negative reviews from critics, it managed to make $28m domestic over the weekend bringing the film’s total to roughly $185m worldwide. I personally enjoyed the film and felt like it was a suitable way to introduce the Turtles to a new generation.

Coming in at number two is fan favorite and Marvel masterpiece Guardians of the Galaxy. The film had earnings of $25m domestic for a worldwide total of $419m. I’d like to think that placement this high indicates viewers are giving this one multiple viewings. For those of you that haven’t seen this movie yet, what are you doing with your life?

The guys from New Girl brought in $18m domestic with Let’s Be Cops, their take on the buddy cop genre. Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. pretend to be cops after a mix-up at a masquerade party works out in their favor. It was good for a few laughs as long as you don’t set your expectations too high.

The disappointment of the weekend has to be the weak opening of $16m domestic for the ensemble action film The Expendables 3. With the largest collection of action stars out of any Expendables film it would have been hard to predict an opening this low. Maybe it’s the PG-13 rating, or the fact that the film leaked online about two weeks ago and has been downloaded 2.2 million times since. Either way, it’s not good.

Rounding out the top five is The Giver at rough earnings of $13m domestic. Also a fairly weak opening. Fans of the franchise must be smart enough to know when not to pay money to find out that the book was better.
