Patrick Stewart recently had an interview with Digital Spy where he stated he had met with Marvel Studios and Kevin Fiege about X-Men about Charles Xavier, and possibly how to insert him in the MCU.
“I met with Kevin Feige a couple of months ago and we had long, long conversations. And there have been moves and suggestions, which include Charles Xavier.”
Stewart added that if it had not been for the movie Logan, a futuristic X-Men film that killed off all the X-Men, and ended with both Xavier and eventually Logan’s death, he would be ready to go and take the role on again. However, it doesn’t seem likely that he is to return due to that way the plot wrapped things up in the 2017 film.
“Here’s the problem… If we had not made Logan, then yes, I would probably be ready to get into that wheelchair one more time and be Charles Xavier. But Logan changed all that. In that sense, it was not just the deaths of those two men in the franchise, but it was also goodbye to our part in them as well”.
However, we are talking about comic stories here, so if it is just the plot director or story that is holding him back, we know that can change as easily as the wind.
In dealing with comics, and by extension, comic book movies, we must remember that the end does not always mean the end. There are so many unique ways to see Xavier in the movies, and there are even more unique ways that we can see Patrick Stewart in those wheels again. Just how J.K. Simmons came back as J. Jonah Jameson in the recent Spider-Man: Far From Home. Same actor, different universe. Nothing is impossible.
