Alright, we got to talk about that art style.
More of manga’s biggest stars have stepped into the ring for Jump Force, the upcoming crossover 3D fighting game featuring Shonen Jump characters.
The six new fighters were revealed in a trailer for the game unveiled at Gamescom 2018. Check it out below.
Shown first were the villains: Blackbeard from One Piece, Sōsuke Aizen from Bleach, and Hisoka Marrow from Hunter x Hunter.
We then see the heroes in action, with Gon from Hunter x Hunter up first, transforming and showing off his hilariously long hair. Next is two One Piece characters, first being the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy, Sabo, and then the Straw Hat Pirates’ cook, Sanji.
And finally, we see the proud prince of Saiyans Vegeta, firing off a giant Final Flash (featured the trailer’s thumbnail).
The trailer also showed off some stages. As the main gimmick of the game is that the manga worlds are colliding with our own, stages are a mix of manga and real world locations with the best/most hilarious being Namek housing a chunk of the Statue of Liberty.
You maniacs!!! You blew it up!
The trailer also ends by teasing that a “new hero rises.” I’m going to guess the character we see next is an avatar the player can customize, but we’ll see!
Alright, let’s talk about that art style. Jump Force is going with this weird hyper-realistic approach to the manga characters, giving them textured clothing and flowing hair, for example.
I don’t think it looks as bad as others claim, but yeah, it still looks a little grody.
Look at Black Beard. He’s already a pretty gross looking dude, so giving him realistic finger nails and gut hair really isn’t doing him any favors. Then again, maybe that’s what they were going for.
Jump Force comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
