If you left before the post-credit scene following Justice League (or if you stayed home and read a book or something, good for you), you missed a pretty important development within the DC Extended Universe. Spoilers for Justice League to follow.
It is revealed that Lex “Granny’s Peach Tea” Luthor has escaped from prison, and is visited by Deathstroke on a yacht, contemplating how they should form their own team to combat the newly revived Superman and newly formed Justice League.
It is here where we see for the first time (without his mask) Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke. Our first official glimpse of the eyepatch-wearing hunky silver fox would later be shared by Manganiello via his Twitter.
Now back to Lex’s proposition. That Jolly Rancher-eating, three-point-shooting goofball was obviously alluding to the Legion of Doom, DC’s iconic evil team of baddies from all corners of the multiverse. Although nothing is set in stone, apparently DC and Warner Bros. have big plans for this proposed villainous group.
An industry insider has recently spilled to El Fanboy that Warner Bros. is no longer interested in having Darkseid be the next big bad for the Justice League to face. Rather, the DCEU will focus on introducing members of the Legion of Doom, setting them up as the biggest threat facing the League.
The insider went on to say that next year’s Comic-Con may give us concrete details about the Legion’s role in the DCEU, but probably not until after Aquaman releases.
They’re working on something cool for SDCC [San Diego Comic Con] 18, related to LOD [Legion of Doom]. They want to continue planting seeds and building momentum for the team. Things will be generally quiet on the DC front until Aquaman hype begins, but I can tell you that there will be another LOD tag at end of that.
If anything, another Legion of Doom tease after Aquaman would make sense, as Black Manta (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen) is set to appear in the film, and is often a prominent member of the team.
As always, take this report with a truck full of salt, as even though introducing the Legion could be a smart move and would push the DCEU away from the MCU’s own Darkseid, Thanos, it’s important to note that the DCEU isn’t in the best shape right now. Justice League is underperforming, and the only future film that’s absolute certainty is Aquaman. Weaving the Legion into films that may not even get made is obviously a gamble, so we’ll just have to wait and see if the evil team actually assembles.
Till then, here’s a sneak peek of what to expect.
