“Make me proud, Ellie!”
After almost a year of no updates, a new trailer for The Last of Us Part II debuted at PlayStation’s Paris Games Week 2017 Conference. Check it out below.
Oh geez. If that made you wince or close your eyes, you’re not alone. Featuring extreme violence and a harrowing tone, this trailer is a reminder that the world of The Last of Us is brutal and bleak.
But perhaps just as noteworthy as the violence is the absence of two major characters. Specifically, Joel and Ellie are nowhere to be seen.
Instead, the trailer focuses on three new characters: Yara (the girl who gets her arm smashed), Lev (the boy with the bow), and a mysterious woman with Anchor Arms, whose identity has yet to be revealed by developer Naughty Dog.
This secrecy has led many to believe this woman is Anna, Ellie’s mother, meaning this sequence takes place long before the events of the first game. While there’s not a ton to go off from the trailer, the woman does slightly resemble Ellie, and it’s worth noting Clickers (the zombies of this universe), are referred to as “demons,” while they are universally known as Clickers in first game.
The game’s brilliant first trailer showed that Joel and Ellie will indeed return for the sequel, so could The Last of Us Part II have a split timeline? Or even more characters to play as? We’ll have to wait and see.
The Last of Us II is in development for PlayStation 4.
