Get ready for Rise of the Dawn of the War of the Planet of the Batman.
After some initial rumors, it has now been officially confirmed that Matt Reeves will direct the upcoming solo Batman film.
Reeves has directed a number of high-profile films in the past, notably including Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and this summer’s War of the Planet of the Apes.
“We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate,” explained Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group (via the official press release). “Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”
The director himself even voiced his excitement for working on the film:
“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”
It’s been a rocky last few weeks for Warner Bros. and DC, as Ben Affleck revealed he would not be directing The Batman, and when Reeves was originally rumored to take sit in the director’s chair, reports then came out saying Reeves was no longer up for the job.
However, it seems like everything’s going well right now, as even Batfleck showed his support for Reeves on Twitter.

Would we have preferred Affleck direct The Batman as originally intended? Definitely, but Reeves is an awesome talent, and we can’t wait to see what he does with this iconic character.
The Batman still doesn’t have an official release. Probably 2018. Maybe.
