ICYMI: Marvel’s GOTG Highest Onscreen Body Count in History

And everyone was worried about one talking tree…

[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]hen you think about James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, there are a few things that come to mind–the music, Rocket & Groot, or its comedic charm. However, a new study is claiming that Marvel Studio’s cosmic adventure also boasts the highest onscreen death toll ever.

Audiences witnessed the deaths of over 83, 000 individuals when the film debuted in the summer of 2014. The enormous body count can be attribute to the Nova Corps valiant effort in the film’s third act. But for those who are doubting this statistic, you’re not alone. Director James Gunn sounded off when a fan questioned GOTG‘s number one spot, the fan citing Alderaan. Gunn quickly pointed out that this was exclusively onscreen deaths. Head over to the AV club if you’re interested in the whole exchange.

Personally, this information makes me think how uneven ratings for movies really are. Audiences can witness the deaths of tens of thousands but curse words are deemed too vulgar. Big Hollywood movies treat death with little respect. The films that really suffer are the independent films and comedies that would could reach a bigger audience, if given a more realistic rating. Filmmakers like Judd Apatow have commented on this phenomena before but it is unlikely we see a paradigm shift in how films are rated.

But I digress, here’s the rest of the list of Most Onscreen Deaths:

1. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – 83,871 (PG-13)
2. DRACULA UNTOLD – 5,687 (PG-13)
3. THE SUM OF ALL FEARS – 2,922 (PG-13)
4. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING – 2,798 (PG-13)
5. 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE – 2,234 (R)
6. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS – 1,741 (PG-13)
7. THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS – 1,647 (R)
8. THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES – 1,417(PG-13)
9. BRAVEHEART – 1,297 (R)
10. THE AVENGERS – 1,019 (PG-13)
