The after-credits scene in X-Men: Apocalypse leaves the third Wolverine movie with plenty of options.
[dropcap size=small]O[/dropcap]ver the past few weeks Hugh Jackman has been teasing us with small snippets of information regarding his last Wolverine film. At first, it seemed that Hugh Jackman’s last film as the adamantium-clawed mutant would follow the course of the comic book series Old Man Logan. However, if you stayed behind in the movie theater after X-Men: Apocalypse was over and the credits began to roll you probably realized that something much more than Old Man Logan will be involved in the third Wolverine movie.
If you don’t recognize the woman in the photo above that’s okay, we’ll fill you in on the details. The woman in the photo above is Laura Kinney, aka X-23, a mutant created from the partial genetic material taken from Wolverine. X-23 is similar to Wolverine in that she has accelerated healing factor that allows her to regenerate with incredible speed and she has even reattached her own limbs with no side consequences. Thanks to X-23’s healing factor she has heightened physical senses, strength, speed, agility, reflexes/reactions, coordination, balance, and endurance to superhuman levels. However, unlike Wolverine, X-23 has only two retractable adamantium claws and a single, retractable adamantium claw in each of her feet. Pretty impressive, right?
So that now that you know just who X-23 is you might be wondering how she relates to the post-credit scene in X-Men: Apocalpyse. The original Weapon X program involved Wolverine himself and after he escaped the project was revived by two mutant geneticists to create the ultimate killing machine, X-23. Now this is where the Essex Corp comes in, Essex Corp was a reference to Nathaniel Essex aka Mister Sinister, a mad scientist turned mutant that is obsessed with the Summers bloodline (Havoc and Cyclops) and wants to create the ultimate mutant (Cable, Deadpool’s…sort of best friend).
According to Gamezone‘s ‘reliable source’ the third Wolverine film will be titled Weapon X. If this is true and the film has parts of Old Man Logan added to it, we could see nearly all of Wolverine’s entire story played out and possibly set up for a new Wolverine (X-23) to take Hugh Jackman’s place. While this is still unconfirmed one thing is certain, new footage for the film will be shown at the San Diego Comic-Con.
