Two new Xbox One consoles are supposedly in the making at Microsoft.
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]ith Sony’s Playstation 4 outperforming Microsoft’s Xbox One not only in overall sales but in power as well, Microsoft has been under pressure from its fans to release a newer, stronger console. Up until several weeks ago, many believed that Microsoft would be focusing on an unnamed next-generation Xbox after news surfaced about the company advertising three job positions on LinkedIn with each position searching for people to develop and design a new console architecture. However, with Sony announcing their plans to release an improved and redesigned Playstation 4 Microsoft has been prompted to, “among other things”, release a cheaper and smaller Xbox One that contains a two terabyte hard drive according to Kotaku.
According to a source close to Polygon, one of the two newest Xbox One consoles, supposedly going by the name of Project Scorpio, will have a “slimmed down version of the current hardware”, contain a controller redesign and will be four times as powerful as the Xbox One. One of The Verge‘s sources claims that the smaller and cheaper console will be “40 percent smaller than the current model, and will likely include 4K support”.
As mentioned before, Sony’s Playstation 4 has outperformed the Xbox One when it comes to power and the company’s Playstation 4 NEO is reportedly performing at 4.14 teraflops. Microsoft’s Project Scorpio will be aiming to outperform the Playstation 4 NEO with a performance target of 6 teraflops and Microsoft hopes to “end this narrative” of being the company that has come up short when compared to Sony.
Unfortunately, if you’re excited at the thought of owning a much more powerful Xbox One come holiday season of 2016 don’t get your hopes up. While the announcement of Sony’s Playstation 4 NEO has motivated Microsoft to release an improved console, it would be unfeasible for the company to release Project Scorpio anytime this year and even into 2017. Microsoft’s smaller and cheaper Xbox One is expected to be formally announced at this year’s E3.
