<GASP!> A “funny” DC movie?!?
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the launching point for the DC Cinematic Universe, has received mixed critical reception to say the least. Perhaps the most criticized aspect of the film is its dark and gloomy tone. Basically, nobody smiled, and the movie as whole is the opposite of a fun time.
Warner Bros. is apparently well aware of this criticism, and is currently taking extreme measures to make sure the next DC film isn’t accused of being too brooding.
Birth Movies Death reports that Suicide Squad currently isn’t the fun “Guardians of the Galaxy DC equivalent” we may have hoped for based off what we saw in last trailer (the one cut to “Bohemian Rhapsody”).
A source close to the site revealed that “every joke in the movie is in that trailer,” with the rest of the film matching the tone of Batman v Superman.
However, the positive reception of that trailer has led Warner Bros. to fast track a series of reshoots, which are apparently happening now, where jokes and lighter moments will be injected into Suicide Squad.
Reshoots are very costly though, as assembling the crew and big name cast isn’t cheap; plus, principal shooting ended last August. Due to this, the film’s budget will most likely greatly increase, but Warner Bros. is willingly to bite the bullet if it means Suicide Squad is a hit with fans and critics.
We don’t think a superhero movie with a dark tone means that it will be a bad film. Look no further than The Dark Knight trilogy. In the case of Batman v Superman, a film with a messy story, undeveloped characters, and choppy editing, the dark tone was just the cherry on top of a stinky sundae.
We hope the crew of Suicide Squad is making smart decisions that don’t lead to moments in the movie where it’s clear the studio interfered with the film’s original vision.
Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
