Zorro is back!
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] new Zorro movie, titled Z, has been announced by Lantica Media and Sobini Films. They have decided on Gravity screenwriter Jonás Cuarón as the director and screenwriter for the upcoming project. Jonás is the son of Oscar-winning filmmaker, Alfonso Cuarón. Alfonso co-wrote Gravity with Jonás.
Jonás made his directorial debut with the 2007 film Year of the Nail and has an upcoming thriller, Desierto, that has generated of lot buzz. “When I saw Desierto, I was impressed with Jonás’ command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors,” said Sobini Films CEO Mark Amin on hiring Cuarón.
The original idea was that the film would be a post-apocalyptic adventure featuring the Zorro character under the title Zorro Reborn, but after being delayed for a couple of years the project was ended. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cuarón is going to go away from the post-apocalyptic idea in favor of a setting in the near future.
Mozart in the Jungle actor Gael García Bernal was attached to the Zorro Reborn project before it was canceled. There is no news if Bernal will still be in the new Z. Bernal was in Cuarón’s Desierto so they do have a working relationship.
There is no release date for Z and shooting is expected to start this summer.
