While McConaughey is out, actress Pom Klementieff joins the cast of the upcoming sequel.
Matthew McConaughey is currently in high demand. After seemingly pulling a 180 with his career through his incredible performances in Dallas Buyers Club, True Detective, and Interstellar, the actor has become a wanted man in Hollywood.
Recently, Disney and Marvel wanted McConaughey to play the unknown villain for the incoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and unfortunately, he has turned down the role.
Variety reports that McConaughey was the first choice to play the mysterious villain for the sequel; and in fact, the film’s director, James Gunn, anticipated his participation. However, McConaughey has passed on the project, leaving the role still open.
Not all bad news though, as actress Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy) has apparently been cast in the film. She is highly speculated to be playing Mantis, a telepathic martial artist who has appeared in the Guardians comic series.
Back to McConaughey, though. While it’s a bummer that he wont be in the film, it’s time to speculate what role he passed on…
Could it have been Star Lord’s mysterious father? Maybe, but McConaughey isn’t that much older than Chris Pratt though…
How about Magnus, aka evil Adam Warlock? Possibly…
Or Thane? Son of Thanos? Perhaps…
But we actually think it will be Norman Osborn…IN SPACE!
Just kidding.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently in preproduction, with filming set to begin early next year.
The entire team from the first film, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, is set to return, and we cannot wait.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
