Bastion
Bastion is an RPG where you must construct a safe haven after Calamity, an event that turned the world into a group of floating islands. The story is short and sweet, while the action is stunning.
Batman: Arkham Knight
In Rocksteady’s final installment in the Arkham series, Batman must defeat old nemesis Scarecrow to save Gotham. Arkham Knight retains the franchise’s simple, yet fun, fighting system, and adds the Batmobile to the Dark Knight’s bag o’ tricks, which help give the game an 87 from Metacritic. The story is darker than any other Batman game, and it really exemplifies the sacrifices Bruce Wayne must make to be the Caped Crusader.
Bloodborne
From the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne is an RPG set in Yharnam, which is cursed with an illness that is spreading through the city. Like the Dark Souls game, this is one of the most difficult titles ever on the PS4. Bloodborne earned high marks from Metacritic, with a score of 92.
Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition
The longtime PC RPG finally made its way to the PS4 in 2014. You’ll embark on a five-act journey to save the world of Sanctuary from evil forces. Diablo III made an easy transition to consoles and earned high marks from Metacritic.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
The third installment in the Dragon Age series received a grade from Metacritic (89). Like the previous games, Inquisition is a beautifully crafted RPG that allows you to customize your party as you battle anything from dragons to the demonic creatures from The Fade. Get ready to sink 60+ hours into this epic adventure.
Fez
No, Fez isn’t the game based on the character from That 70s Show, but it is one fun adventure. Characters are designed in 8-bit, like your favorite games from the 90s. And the objective is simple: Find gold cubes on each platform world. However, you must rotate the world 90 degrees to access every area. Fez earned a 90 on Metacritic.
flower
Like its predecessor, flOw, flower uses simple and fun gameplay, and its beautiful setting is a character in itself. The flow of the game (see what we did there?) is soothing, with breathtaking graphics and a great soundtrack. Flower won’t necessarily challenge you, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthy play.
Grand Theft Auto 5
The first next-gen Grand Theft Auto is also one of the most-praised PS4 games to date. GTA received an extremely high 97 rating on Metacritic. GTA V puts you in the open world of Los Santos, where you’ll play as Franklin, Michael and Trevor, three very different guys. The online mode and heists are the highlights of what’s sure to become a classic title.
Journey
Journey surprised many in 2012 when it was was released to critical acclaim. Journey received a 93 on Metacritic. Journey is a third-person adventure game, where you travel through the desert. It may not sound like much, but critics loved the mesmerizing visuals and enthralling gameplay.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The PS4 might be young, but there are plenty of great games to play on the best-selling console. Here are the most critically heralded games on the almighty PlayStation 4, thanks to our friends at Metacritic.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was recently released to much fanfare. Metacritic added to the praise with a score of 93. In what could be Hideo Kojima’s final Metal Gear, you play as Big Boss in a ginormous open-world stealth action game.
Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition
Minecraft has been an incredibly popular PC game, but in 2014, a PS4 game was released. The title received high marks from Metacritic because of its endless building possibilities and the seamless transition to a console. It might not top the PC version, but it’s still a heck of a lot of fun to play.
Rayman Legends
Rayman Legends is a fun and challenging game for all ages. With improved graphics, difficult boss fights and no load times, Rayman is one of critics’ favorite 2-D platform games to date. In the PS4 version, you can even play as Assassin Ray, which is a character inspired by the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Rayman received a 90 from Metacritic.
Shovel Knight
Shovel Knight beams you back to your favorite 8-bit titles, with fun gameplay and a quirky main character: a knight who wields a shovel. The Shovel Knight must defeat the evil Enchantress and find his long-lost love. Metacritic gave Shovel Knight a high mark with a score of 91 overall.
The Last of Us: Remastered
The Last of Us originally was a PS3 title, but a remastered version was released in 2014. The Last of Us tells the story of Joel and Ellie after an epidemic has infected a majority of the population. These infected humans, along with looters, are bumps in the road to finding a cure for the disease. The Last of Us is a thrilling experience with a story to match the action. It’s Metacritic’s second-highest ranked PS4 title at 95.
