Nat Wolff may see the Light.
[dropcap size=small]F[/dropcap]resh from Paper Towns, Nat Wolff is said to be in final talks with Warner Bros. for the lead role in the live action adaptation of Death Note – the hugely successful Japanese manga and anime series by Tsugumi Ohba, and Takeshi Obata.
The US adaptation has been in development for several years now, and has had quite the bumpy ride so far. Shane Black was originally attached to direct the project, but he eventually dropped out in July this year. Adam Wingard will now be sitting in the directors chair, and with Wolff in final talks, it looks like the film is finally getting into gear.
As many know, Death Note follows high-school student Light Yagami, who discovers a mysterious notebook that has the power to kill any person whose name is written within it. Light is accompanied by Shinigami – supernatural beings who have to kill humans in order to stay alive – as he tries to rid the world of evil-doers.
It’ll be fun to see how the film brings the Shinigami to life – especially Ryuk.
It’s hard to imagine just who could fill Light’s shoes after being so used to the manga and anime character so many have come to love, but we’ll just have to see if Wolff can pull it off. It’ll also be interesting to see how he compares to Tatsuya Fujiwara, who played Light in the Japanese live action adaptation of the same name back in 2006.
No other cast members have yet been announced, so who knows who we’ll seeing as L – it’s really anyone’s guess.
Death Note is said to begin filming in Spring next year.
