After a flurry of rumors surrounding Whedon taking the directing helm, some truth comes out regarding a new director.
[dropcap size=small]J[/dropcap]oss Whedon can be described as a TV and movie genius,- with projects under his belt like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and both of the Avengers movies, it is not surprising that he is an extremely sought after director. So it would seem that he would be a regular shoe-in for the role of director for Star Wars IX right? Correct it is, but there are only rumors at the moment.
The rumor that Whedon would be taking the directing role can be traced back to the Get Your Geek On Podcast but was created by the hosts as a joke, who were trying to prove how fast rumors moved around. Well it did not take long.
The tweet above links to a MoviePilot article confirms that Joss Whedon is on board for Star Wars IX. The source? The Get Your Geek On podcast. But in the midst of this hugely untrue rumor, there is some hope. Making Star Wars, which has been known to produce very reliable news relating to everything Star Wars, said that a source has confirmed that Whedon is in the mix of directors that potentially have a shot at the film.
Episode IX is not the only Star Wars movie looking for a director. The newly vacated spot of director, due to the departure of Josh Trank, for the Boba Fett anthology film is also a possibility for Whedon. He has had his fair share of space-related projects, like Firefly and Serenity, so he could fit well with either of the two movies.
Although none of this has been officially confirmed by anyone at Disney, it is nice to be hearing about plans for films so far in the future. With almost four years until the proposed release in 2019, Episode IX may be in director talks like this for a long time.
