’23 Jump Street’ Still Happening, Not Crossing Over with ‘Men In Black’

It looks like Schmidt and Jenko are indeed going to medical school.

The fate of the Jump Street franchise has been in a strange limbo since the series’ last entry, 22 Jump Street.

We’ve known for a while that a sequel is in development, as well as a female-lead spin-off film, but since Sony emails were hacked due to The Interview debacle, rumors have been swirling that Jump Street will crossover with the Men in Black franchise (which would be awesome).

However, it now looks like this won’t be happening anytime soon, as series directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord told MTV that the Men in Black crossover is just a fun idea.

“Nothing’s changed. It’s still a crazy idea, and we only do things that seem like they’re going to be terrible. We’re really focusing on what’s a great story for Schmidt and Jenko and how to tell the next chapter in their lives. And perhaps use creatures from another world at the same time.”

While it doesn’t seem like Schmidt and Jenko will ever meet Agent K and J, oddly this seemed like the logical step forward for the franchise.

During the (genius) end credit sequence for 22 Jump Street, future missions for Schmidt and Jenko were present as hypothetical sequel films the duo will star in.

22 Jump Street largely lampooned the idea of dumb and unnecessary movie sequels, which is why the film is so brilliant, thus, a wacky crossover seemed more plausible than 22 more Jump Street movies where Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum pose as students.

Anyway, it now seems like the sequels presented at the end of 22 Jump Street will somehow fit into the Jump Street universe, and more specifically, the actual next film.

In an interview with slashfilm, Phil Lord revealed that 23 Jump Street will connect to the ‘fake’ titles shown in 22’s credits:

“We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet. The sequels are canon. [Rodney Rothman] had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of 22 Jump Street and do something that hadn’t been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story.”

Well, if this is true, and the end of 22 Jump Street really does foreshadow the franchise’s future, get ready for 23 Jump Street: Medical School.

It may not be Men in Black, but hey, we’re not complaining.
