Earlier this morning, Nintendo held yet another one of their ‘Nintendo Direct’ events which included all kinds of fun announcements. One such announcement that immediately got us excited was that GoldenEye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch and Xbox. However, some fans may find major disappointment in the news that online functionality will be rather limited and exclusive to the Switch version.

After 25 years, the iconic Nintendo 64 title is coming to modern hardware in all its original glory (which is sort of the problem). Between the good news and the bad, we should start with the good. The good news is, this HD remaster is full of awesome features like a 16:9 aspect ratio in 4K, dual-stick support, split-screen co-op, and smoother frame rates. And don’t worry, the character designs will still retain their block-head visual style.
However, the bad news is that online multiplayer modes will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive, according to the official 007 website.
In addition to having no online multiplayer for Xbox players, the game will be exclusive to Nintendo’s ‘Switch Online’ and Xbox’s ‘Game Pass‘ services. To reiterate, this means the game is neither coming to PC nor PlayStation platforms, which is just one more devastating blow that completely killed this announcement for us in its entirety.
Despite the original GoldenEye 007 being the third best-selling N64 title of all time, we have not gotten a remaster or remake of the game since it was originally released in 1997. This was entirely due to legal and rights disputes but we are happy to see the game returning in some form. However, the missing online features and functionality, and being an Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online exclusive, is rough news for fans.
No specific release date was given for GoldenEye 007 on either platform but at this point, we would not be surprised if the wind in your sails died completely by now. The fact that the game is coming to only two subscription platforms and online multiplayer being an exclusive to the worst online platform of the big three is a major turn-off.
