Big confirmation…but don’t expect the MCU to lose a Chris.
When speaking with the Huffington Post, Marvel’s golden duo, the brothers Russo, dropped a tantalizing tidbit in regards to the fallout of Captain America: Civil War. Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America, after conflicting loyalties drove him to chose Bucky, the pure-hearted Rogers will leave behind the vibranium shield. As much was insinuated during the climactic battle in the Russo’s epic blockbuster, but now confirmation comes from the directors themselves.
Joe Russo was quoted:
“I think him dropping the shield was him letting go of that identity…the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice he was making.”
Now fans will argue feverishly about what this news means. Many will speculate it will lead to the big screen debut of a short lived alias of Steve Rogers, Nomad. Meaning the mantle of Captain America will either be left vacant or taken up by another. I would bet on the former considering the high esteem MCU characters have shown for Rogers in the past. The only way either Sam Wilson or Bucky Barnes takes on the Captain America moniker is if Rogers were to perish.
This is also unlikely. Robert Downey Jr.’s time as Tony Stark is finite. The torch bearer for the MCU will eventually reach the end of his road. For the sake of continuity, Marvel Studios, ran by people much smarter than you or I, must know that Evans is lined up to be the next MCU darling. Others could compelling argue another actress or actor could take the mantle but Evans plays his role so well it would be a shame to see him go.
Do not fret, there is no doubt that Evans will reprise his role as Rogers in the future, he is contractually obligated to do so. With or without his famous patriotic moniker, Rogers will be an Avenger when Thanos does finally appear. The only real question is will we see Nomad in a faithfully adapted costume, which would be entirely ridiculous. His shirt is so low-cut, who is he, Power Girl?
