The British teen drama is set to get revamped across the pond as part of a modern generation of TV programming.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he British supernatural teen drama Misfits – which originally aired on E4 back in 2009 – is set to get some American treatment, with a reboot planned for the show on the new channel, Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family).

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via Polygon), the project is set to be fronted by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who are both known for The O.C and Gossip Girl.

The original show followed a group of young delinquents who get struck by lightening whilst doing community service, and begin to develop superpowers.

But they aren’t just your run-of-the-mill superpowers – like X-Ray vision, or invisibility – they come in the form of heightened flaws within the characters; opening up the door for crazy situations, and a generous helping of comedy.

E4’s adaptation featured Game of Thrones actor Iwan Rheon, who plays the terrifyingly sadistic Ramsay Bolton. Other actors included This is England’s Joseph Gilgun, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Lauren Socha, Robert Sheehan and Antonia Thomas. So far no names have been mentioned for the reboot.

With Schwartz and Savage on board, the reboot is sure to get that glossy, youthful, teen drama vibe both are so good at creating. The original show had a very gritty edge, being set in a borough of south east London, so it’ll be interesting to see if, and how, this feel is re-created within what will undoubtedly be an American setting.

Misfits seems like a good choice for the new Freeform channel led by Tom Aschiem, who told The Hollywood Reporter the channel is looking to deliver fresh content that best represents a modern generation:

Freeform is a brand built for the fresh taste of a modern generation who value open-mindedness, fluidity, immediacy and who don’t like to be fenced in.

A show that follows a group of young outsiders who gain outlandish powers would certainly suit the free, open-minded direction the channel’s looking to go in.

No release date has yet been announced for the reboot, but hopefully we’ll get some more news soon.
