In an interview with the New York Times Ted Cruz said that Captain Kirk is a Republican.
[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]The actor William Shatner, best known for his role as Captain Kirk, has taken to Twitter to respond to Ted Cruz’s statement that “Kirk is a Republican and Picard is a Democrat.” His tweet said, “Star Trek wasn’t political. I’m not political; I can’t even vote in the US. So to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly.”[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap] never thought I would see the day when a United States politician would put a label on whether or not our beloved Captain Kirk is Republican or Democrat, but yet here we are. While speaking with the New York Times, Ted Cruz said, “I think it is quite likely that Kirk is a Republican and Picard is a Democrat.”. He went on to say that William Shatner’s Captain Kirk is better than Patrick Stewart’s Captain Picard because Kirk is Republican, at least he is in Ted Cruz’s mind.
Whether or not Captain Kirk actually is Republican is something I will leave to the fans to debate about. But the man who probably knows Captain Kirk best, William Shatner, took to Twitter to respond to Ted Cruz’s statement. He said:
“Star Trek wasn’t political. I’m not political; I can’t even vote in the US. So to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly.”
While Star Trek certainly touched on the elements that could be seen as political, I think William Shatner said it best.
