Nick Carter will write, direct, and star in the horror film from The Asylum.
[dropcap size= small]‘N[/dropcap]Sync and the Backstreet Boys were the top-tier boy bands of the 90’s. While these two groups of heartthrobs were seen as rivals back in the day, today they seem to have put aside their differences for a collaboration; just not on a new album.
Rolling Stone reports that members of both bands will be working together on a low-budget horror flick called Dead 7, which will be written and directed by Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Other Backstreet Boys involved with the project are Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean, and the only member of ‘NSync currently set to appear is Joey Fatone.
Carter has called the film a “zombie Western futuristic horror movie,” with the premise being a ragtag group of gunslingers fighting off a zombie plague. He will also play the lead character, with his band mates co-starring as said gunslingers.
The Asylum, best known for their Syfy film series, Sharknado, will produce the film. This should give you a pretty good idea as to what the tone of the movie will be.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Joey Fatone, the lone ‘NSync member currently attached to the film, shed some light on who else to expect in Dead 7, and the relationship between the two bands.
“I’m the only ‘NSync-er as of now, but you never know. Nick’s vision is to bring some other people in that genre that have never really done a lot of film but that were in music in the Nineties and 2000s,” Fatone acknowledged. “We’ve never done anything together collectively. People always think [Backstreet and ‘NSync] are some sort of rivals. But it’s so funny – there’s never been animosity or anything like that. Now we’re setting the record straight by doing a film together.”
While Dead 7 may sound like the weird dream of a 90’s horror fangirl, the film has the potential to be a lot of fun. Hopefully it will be as great as the last film appearance of the Backstreet Boys.
