[dropcap=small]A[/dropcap]nyone who considers themselves a fan of rap music is most definitely familiar with NWA. The legendary group comprised of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella made music history in the late eighties with their aggressive lyrics and fresh beats paving the way for practically every gangsta rap artist that followed.
As praised as they are it’s about time that these pioneers got some silver screen love, and that’s exactly what the biopic Straight Outta Compton hopes to achieve.
The film follows NWA from its inception through their rise to fame and stars Ice Cube’s actual son O’Shea Jackson Jr. as a young Ice Cube (no pressure), Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, and Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella.
Check out the film’s first trailer as introduced by Dre and Ice Cube.
Straight Outta Compton is written by Andrea Berloff, Jonathan Herman, S. Leigh Savidge, Sheldon Turner, and Alan Wenkus. Directed by F. Gary Gary. In theaters August 14.
