YouTube is trying to aid Content Creators by fighting Copyright claims

YouTube wants it’s content creators to succeed.

[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]ast Thursday, YouTube said it has been developing a new system to help content creators earn money while going through a Content ID claim. The original protocol for a “valid copyright infringement claim” had been for YouTube to take down the clip before any money could be made off of the clip; this follows the rules specified in the infamous Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This would also mean that the clip would be taken down before the creator could argue their defense and before a verdict had been made.

YouTube has already created a system called ContentID, that helps rights holders and creators identify what content is theirs so they can monetize the content. The ContentID and take down processes are separate, however, and videos are still taken down before an argument can be made.

Many YouTube users have expressed their anger over the current processes in place. In the YouTube Help Forum one user wrote,

“The point is, your content ID, copyright claims, and so much more in your system is heavily flawed. The false claimants are not getting punished for their actions. Instead, we are, which isn’t right…This needs to be fixed immediately. Stop relying on an automated system and demand proof of the object being claimed. You are letting this site die…You should listen to ALL of us.”

Under the new system, while claims are being investigated YouTube will hold the revenue being created from the content and if the claim is proves to be false then YouTube will release the revenue to whoever owns rightfully owns the content.

On its blog, YouTube wrote,

“Making sure our Content ID tools are being used properly is deeply important to us, so we’ve built a dedicated team to monitor this. Using a combination of algorithms and manual review, this team has resolved millions of invalid claims in the last year alone, and acted on millions more before they impacted creators. The team also restricts feature access and even terminates a partner’s access to Content ID tools if we find they are repeatedly abusing these tools.”

Many users have already expressed their support for the new system and are excited that YouTube has listened to their feedback.
