Taron Egerton wants to play a Young Wolverine

The Kingsman actor says he would be more than interested in taking on the youthful role of Wolverine after Jackman says farewell.

[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter the success of Kingsman: The Secret Service, a sequel was undoubtedly on the table, with Egerton to return as Eggsy Unwin in the lead once more. But with that performance, it was clear that Egerton would be offered varied roles left and right.

Currently the 24-year-old Welsh actor is working opposite of Hugh Jackman on the set of the biopic “Eddie the Eagle” a story of an Olympic British Ski Jumper from the 80s. During his time on set, Egerton spoke with ScreenRant about his time with Jackman and his interest in joining the X-Men as a young Logan.

“I am a huge X-Men fan! My feeling about that is… I don’t know if I’m quite grizzly enough. My facial hair is still very thin and patchy. I feel someone who plays Wolverine potentially needs testosterone in abundance. Yeah, I’d love to have a go at it, but I don’t know. I don’t know. I was with Hugh the day that he announced his retirement from that role. I did joke about that very thing with him. But the phone hasn’t rang yet, my friend, so I don’t know.”

During the events of Ultimate Comics (an alternate universe that consists of many changes to the mainstream universe– many consider this to be the second most accepted universe in terms of events), Wolverine is out of the picture, but in his replace is Jimmy Hudson, a teenager who discovers he has claws and is Wolverine’s son.

While Logan is essentially immortal, and does not age beyond his fully matured adulthood, he was a boy at one time, which would be an interesting story to tell. Add that to the fact that he could possibly have a son, and that does increase the chances of a youthful Wolverine-esque character stepping into the X-Men films.

Additionally, it would be a wise choice for the studios to choose a young actor to replace Jackman’s character, regardless of origin, as this would give audiences time to cope with the adult replacement. I figure that if they had a trilogy featuring a young actor as Wolverine’s youthful self, or his son, would take enough time away from the sting of replacing Hugh Jackman as the role he has defined for over a decade.

Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, as any casting rumors are merely hearsay at this point. Plus, while Jackman and other parties have stated the Australian actor will not appear in X:Men Apocalypse, we know that this means absolutely nothing and could very likely make the exact opposite true.

As with most Hollywood cases, we will just have to wait it out and see what happens.

X-Men Apocalypse comes to theaters on May 27, 2016. The extensive cast includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Oscar Isaac, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, Lucas Till, Ben Hardy, Lana Condor, and Olivia Munn. The film is directed by Bryan Singer from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg.
