’90s kids rejoice! Sony Pictures and Sega have officially announced plans to bring us a live action/CGI Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

The film will be produced by Neil Moritz (22 Jump Street) with Evan Susser and Van Robichaux of Upright Citizens Brigade fame on screenplay duty. As for a director or a plot, nothing is known at the moment aside from the fact that Sonic’s longtime foe Dr. Eggman will indeed be featured.

SonicGiven the 20+ years of characters and material that the various video games have spawned, it’s safe to assume that the writers will have plenty to work with.

Originally created in 1991 by Sega as an answer to Nintendo’s Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognizable characters on the planet. His video games have grossed over a billion dollars collectively, and he can run crazy fast. Sounds like the makings of a successful movie franchise to me.

Sony Pictures will also be working in conjunction with animation studio Marza Animation Planet.

Marza CEO Masanao Maeda spoke highly of the announcement saying: “Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”

There is no word yet on a release date, but you can guarantee that as soon as it hits theaters we’ll be running there in hyper speed to go see it.
