‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Producer Optimistic about More Sequels with Robert Downey Jr.

Sherlock Holmes 3 may not be the last time we’ll see Robert Downey Jr. as the classic detective.

[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]ince almost five years have passed by since 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, you can forgive fans of Guy Ritchie’s edgy take on the seminal detective for being positively delighted to learn it’s set to return for a third instalment, with the recent announcement of Sherlock Holmes 3.

And the good news just keeps on coming.

Now it seems we may be seeing a whole lot more of them in future, thanks to word on the movie grapevine, which suggests more sequels could be set to follow the third Sherlock venture.

In an interview with Collider, the producer of Sherlock Holmes 3, Joel Silver, revealed they are currently working around Robert Downey Jr’s busy schedule before he gets stuck into the upcoming Marvel movie, Infinity War, with the hope being filming will start this fall:

“It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done. We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.”

More interestingly however, Silver went on to refute the idea that the third round would be the last we’d see of Downey as Sherlock. Expressing his belief that this would not be the last film, Silver teased us with the potential for more sequels to follow:

“I hope [it’s not the last one]. I don’t think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. It’s not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It’s [the actor’s] call. They have to say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go.’ I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done.”

So there you have it. If the third film isn’t the end of a trilogy, with an open-ended story to work with – and the actors are on board to do more – Sherlock Holmes 3 may not be the last we’ll see of Downey and Law’s sleuthing antics.

Given that Downey recently spoke about his eagerness to get back into the role of Holmes for a third time, it wouldn’t be too foolish to hope he’d happily get on board with more in future.

With the project in its early stages, a release date for Sherlock Holmes 3 has not yet been announced.
