We may get a Half-Life film trilogy before an actual Half-Life 3.
It looks like film adaptations of Valve’s premier video game franchises are moving forward with development.
In an interview with IGN regarding 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams revealed that the Half-Life and Portal movies are still a go.
When asked if he could provide an update on the projects, Abrams said, “Not yet, but they’re in development. And we’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update.”
We first heard about these adaptations at the 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit, when Abrams and Valve CEO Gabe Newell announced they would be partnering to create films based on Valve properties. This has been the first confirmation since the announcement that these projects are still being developed.
While nothing official has been confirmed, it should be noted that 10 Cloverfield Lane, which Abrams produced, has recently come to theaters, and was met with strong reviews. This film was directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who’s only previous directing credit was for an unofficial short film, Portal: No Escape.
No Escape has also been very well-received, so would be much of a stretch to think Trachtenberg may attached to the upcoming Portal film? We don’t think so.
Anyway, Valve has a tendency to drag their feet with projects that don’t rhyme with the word “cream,” or games that end with”3″ for that matter, so we’re hesitant to believe a Portal or Half-Life film will be coming soon.
The cake is a lie. Let’s hope these film’s aren’t either.
