Good news PS4 owners!

The ambitious open-universe exploration game No Man’s Sky will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to use the title’s online features.

In a statement issued to Game Informer, a representative of the game’s development team explained that “PS Plus won’t be a requirement to play online, however you will need to connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas.”

No Man Sky will allow for everyone who is playing online to explore the same galaxy together, however, it’s extremely doubtful you’ll bump into anyone. The game’s universe is absolutely massive, with a reported 18 quintillion planets.

PlayStation fans (especially former PS3 users) are painfully aware that online multiplayer for all games has to be bought through the PlayStation Plus service. PS Plus costs $50 for a year subscription, and the service additionally offers two free digital titles per month.

While definitely a gesture of good will for eager fans, the decision to offer free multiplayer in No Man’s Sky seems to be one made out of fairness. From what we’ve seen of the game, coming in contact with another player will basically be impossible, and there aren’t any competitive modes offered either. The online component of this title purely adds to the liveliness of this gigantic universe.

Let’s hope it pays off for us not to pay up.

No Man’s Sky comes to PS4 on August 9 and PC on August 12.
