Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters! They’re back, baby!

It’s official! Filmmaker, Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air), has confirmed that he will be directing and co-writing Ghostbusters 3.

There have been a lot of rumours as to whether this movie would actually happen. We’ve had spin-offs while we have waited, such as the all-female Ghostbusters who came to save the world from the supernatural back in 2016. However, Ghostbusters 3 will be taking us back to the original universe of the franchise, which is said to be set in the present day.

The film will start shooting in a few months with Sony Pictures having the film set down for release in Summer 2020. The first tidbit trailer doesn’t give too much away as to the latest installment’s plot, but it certainly gets the rumour mill rolling, like will the remaining original cast members be back for more ectoplasmic action? Or, at the very least, be making an appearance? Check out the first short but sweet trailer for the upcoming movie below!

What is known about the film is that there will be new characters. Jason Reitman sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about and promote the film, saying that there will be “a lot of surprises and new characters for the audience to meet”.

However, it was clear from the get go that this film would be a family affair. Ivan Reitman, Jason’s father and the director of the original 1984 Ghostbusters and 1989 sequel Ghostbusters 2, will be onboard as well to help his son produce the film. Ivan described it as a “passing of the torch both inside and out” with regards to his son Jason creating the next film. As a child, Jason would go with his father to the sets of the Ghostbusters films. He even starred in Ghostbusters 2 in a minor role as a birthday boy who, when the Ghostbusters show up, says “My dad says you guys are full of crap”.

Because of his close connection to the franchise, Jason reassured fans of the old films that this film will not be a do-over of the previous ones, saying “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot”.

I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t wait to learn more about what Ghostbusters 3 has in store. From what Jason Reitman says about his love for the films, I can only hope that his vision for the film is exactly what fans have been dreaming of.
