Bird has confirmed that his next film will be The Incredibles 2, but the door is still open for him to direct a Star Wars film in the near future.

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n 1999 a movie called The Iron Giant came out, and it was clear that the director, Brad Bird, was a genius and full of talent. Bird went on to direct other animated films such as The Incredibles and Ratatoullie, but it wasn’t till 2011 that he decided to switch into live-action film. Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol was a smash hit and is the highest grossing film in the Mission Impossible franchise.

Bird is clearly talented in both animation and live-action film, its only natural that he is being courted by many different studios to make their films. The Incredibles 2 is one of those films that has been a possibility for some time now. Pixar had announced the sequel to their superhero family film last year, but no director has been picked yet.

During a press conference for his upcoming sci-fi adventure film Tomorrowland, Bird was asked for an update on The Incredibles 2 movie.

“I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”

When the search for a director for Star Wars VII begain, Bird’s name came up and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy reached-out to Bird to take the director’s seat. Bird said he seriously considered moving forward with production on Tomorrowland while simultaneously prepping Episode VII, but he just couldn’t physically do both and decided to focus on Tomorrowland.

With resent news of Josh Trank no longer directing the second film of the Star Wars Anthology, the door is still open for Bird to step in and take the helm.

“Well Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”

Little else is known about The Incredibles 2 movie, with the film still in development we will have to wait until 2016 to see whats next for the crime-fighting family. Tomorrowland directed by Brad Bird and staring George Clooney, Btritt Robertson, and Hugh Laurie will be out May 21.
