Dragon Ball is Getting a NEW Series!

For the first time in over 18 years, the beloved franchise will see a new televised anime series!

The series will be called Dragon Ball Chou, of which “chou” translates to super, hyper, or ultra in English. However, it seems to be all but confirmed that the new series will be called “Dragon Ball Super” in English.

Masako Nozawa, the voice of Goku in Japanese had this to say about the name:

We’ve always used the word ‘chō’ (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

DBS is said to be a project that will be pieced together and overseen by original series creator Akira Toriyama, and will take place after the events of Dragon Ball Z after Goku defeated the sinister Majin Buu, which would make sense considering the past two theatrically released films, Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ (both considered official canon to the series) take place after these events and open up a whole new world of opportunity within the Dragon Ball Universe.

Set to air on Fuji TV in July (Sundays at 9:00am) in Japan this year, DBS will be the first series since Dragon Ball GT finished in 1997. It should be noted that the events of Dragon Ball GT are not considered canon, which means its more of a glorified fan-fiction and the events within GT do not really take place or fit the series storyline. As such, it is safe to assume that Dragon Ball Super will overshadow the events of GT and replace its existence entirely.

As I read the plot [of the series] I’ve already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear…” -Osamu Nozaki, TV Producer

The latest film, Resurrection ‘F’, recently debuted earlier this month in Los Angeles at the Egyptian theater which received widespread acclaim from fans and critics before opening to a staggering and impressive $8 million weekend in Japan the following week on April 18.

With success like that, and fans demanding more, it was bound to happen. And we could not be more excited.
