Well, that didn’t take long. A little over a month after it was announced that Spider-Man would be leaving the MCU following contract negotiation breakdown between Sony and Disney, it looks like Spidey is home (again).

Disney and Sony have announced that they have made a deal for Marvel Studios to produce one more Spider-Man movie for Sony. This third film in the Spidey “Home” series is set to release on July 16, 2021, series director Jon Watts is in talks to direct, and Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” says Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Brief primer: Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man, but Sony made a deal with Disney’s Marvel Studios to allow the character to appear in a number of MCU films and star in films produced by Feige, starting with Captain America: Civil War in 2016. After Spider-Man: Far From Home released this past July, the deal between the two studios broke down because Disney wanted a 50/50 split in co-financing future films, which would give them a bigger chunk of the profit. Sony said no, which seemingly meant Spider-Man would no longer be appearing in MCU related projects.

The new deal that was made by Disney and Sony just yesterday (per Variety) apparently will give Marvel and Disney roughly 25% of the profits from the upcoming Spidey film, less than they wanted, but ensures creative input via producer Kevin Feige.

I can’t really call this surprising, and right now it’s just for a single movie, but finishing Peter’s story in the MCU (especially after the amazing Far from Home mid-credit scene) is enough closure for this pretty miraculous synergy between two of the biggest competing studios in Hollywood.

Spider-Man: Home Again (probably the title, don’t quote me) hits theaters on July 16, 2021.
