The team of developers at Domino Effect have set out to do the impossible: To produce a large-scale, high quality video game on a budget of $0.

That’s right. A group of people are working for free simply because they have a passion for what they are doing (sounds familiar).

The game in question is a first-person shooter called Red Awakening. Domino Effect’s summary of the game’s premise is as follows:

“In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the United States is in turmoil. The youth are out of control, protests turn to riots in the streets with students boycotting schools across the country, fearing a civil war with the youth of America and the ever increasing threat of both domestic and international communism, the powers that be fund a CIA derivative of the MKSEARCH program, Codenamed: “Red Awakening”, a program designed to solve all of America’s problems at once.”

I’m on board.

The young students have been working on the game since April during any free time they can find between school and full-time jobs. Red Awakening is a passion project in the truest sense.

Any game with a chainsaw as a weapon is automatically 10x more fun. It's science.

Without any budget or workspace, the students had to improvise. They would meet at Starbucks and their university library to discuss the game’s content, and divvy up the work.

A major breakthrough for Red Awakening occurred when Domino Effect was invited by Epic Games (the makers behind the Gears of War franchise) to show off the game’s working multiplayer at the Develop Conference & Expo. This marked the beginning of Red Awakening’s public exposure.

Hype surrounding the game is slowly beginning to build, and Red Awakening is in the running for the 2014 Indie Game of the Year Award from indiedb.com.

The team at Domino Effect is a shining example that as long as your have an abundance of creativity and passion, the all-mighty dollar isn’t so mighty after all.

Red Awakening is due for release in October 2015. Check out the early, work-in-progress footage below, and for more info visit Red-Awakening.com!
